What you see

Fairways between eucalyptus and laurel, with a bank of cloud often behind them. The course hosted the Madeira Islands Open for years and is considered the tougher of the island’s two — mostly because there is almost always wind.

When it’s best

As a check for anyone heading east. Santo da Serra sits exactly at the height where the north-east trade piles up. Cloud running through here while Caniçal is in sunshine below isn’t a contradiction — it’s the normal case.

If you’re going riding, walking, or to the Sunday market, pack a jacket: it’s reliably a few degrees cooler here than in Funchal.

Watch it or go?

Golfers: go, but book a tee time and expect wind.

For everyone else it’s a place you drive through on the way to the Ponta de São Lourenço — with one exception. The Sunday market at Santo da Serra is one of the few on the island where locals outnumber visitors.
