What you see
The Pontinha was originally an offshore rock; the link to the mainland was filled in. Today it carries the cruise terminal. When two large ships tie up on the same morning, several thousand people arrive in the old town within an hour or two — into the Monte cable car, into the Mercado dos Lavradores, into the toboggans.
That’s the actual information here. If a ship is in, do Monte and the market in the afternoon.
When it’s best
Early. Ships mostly arrive between six and eight and leave again in the early evening. Look at nine and you can see the shape of your day.
Watch it or go?
Watching is enough. The pier itself is working port, not a walk. The better view over the same bay is free from the Forte de São Tiago, or from above in Monte.
