Because that is the honest answer on Madeira: for a good half of these, a hire car is enough. Cabo Girão, Porto Moniz, Fanal, Santana, the Mercado dos Lavradores — you drive there, park, and pay nothing or a few euros. Booking makes sense where something is added that you cannot supply yourself: a boat, a rope, a driver for a point-to-point hike, a guide who knows where the dolphins are today.

What is actually worth booking
If you have a week and want to book only three things:
- A whale and dolphin boat trip. You cannot do it without a boat, the hit rate is high, and at €35 it is the clearest value on the island.
- The transfer for Pico do Arieiro → Pico Ruivo. A point-to-point hike in your own car is a getting-back problem. €30–50 solves it.
- Canyoning, or a guided levada with tunnels. With kit and local knowledge both are a different activity than without.
Everything else — viewpoints, Porto Moniz, Fanal, Santana, the markets — you will see more cheaply and at your own pace with a hire car.
