What you see
A sheltered bay between two breakwaters, and between them pale sand that does not belong here: it was shipped in, and the breakwaters hold it. The result is the calmest place to swim on the west coast — no swell, no shingle, a shallow entry.
Above it sits the Mudas, the contemporary art museum, a concrete building that ducks into the hillside.
When it’s best
Mornings, when you want to know how busy it will get. In July and August the beach is packed by afternoon; if you open the camera at ten and already see towels, go somewhere else.
Watch it or go?
Go if you have children with you. For families it’s the best swimming spot in the west, and the only one where nobody hobbles over pebbles. Without children the beach is interchangeable, and the Mudas is the better reason for the drive.
It’s about 45 minutes from Funchal on the expressway.
