What you see

Shingle, not dunes — but very clear water. The bay sits on the edge of the Garajau marine reserve, and that’s why more people here are wearing fins than carrying parasols.

Inside the reserve live dusky groupers that decades without fishing have made unbothered by people, and they come correspondingly close. It’s one of the few places in the Atlantic where that happens reliably.

When it’s best

Mornings, for the same reason as at Penha de Franca: underwater visibility depends on the swell, and the wind builds through the day. Calm water at nine means good visibility at ten.

Watch it or go?

Go if diving or snorkelling is on your list — in that case ahead of anything else on this coast. For lying in the sun it’s a solid, unremarkable bay; Calheta does that better.

The descent from Caniço de Baixo is steep. There’s a lift at the hotel and a footpath; if you’re carrying kit, take the lift.
