What you see
The seafront, the shingle beach, the water. On the right the coast breaks into a wall that shelters the town from the west — the same wall that gives it its weather.
When it’s best
When things look bad everywhere else. That is the entire point of this camera: when Funchal is under low cloud and the day looks lost, it shows blue sky here surprisingly often. Forty minutes’ drive, different weather.
Second-best is sunset. The camera faces south-west and the sun goes down in frame.
Watch it or go?
Go — but as plan B, not plan A. Ponta do Sol isn’t a sight, it’s a quiet town with a shingle beach, a few cafes on the water and dependable light. Exactly right for a day when the north is drowning.
If you’re already there: the Levada do Moinho starts above the town, and Calheta, with the only sand beach in the area, is twenty minutes on. More in the West chapter.
