What you see
A wide avenue between the cathedral and the Parque de Santa Catarina, lined with jacaranda trees. For most of the year it is a pleasant, unremarkable street. On these dates it is not:
- Late April into mid-May — the jacarandas flower and the avenue spends three weeks under a purple roof. The most photographed spot on the island, and the only reason to open this camera daily in spring.
- Flower Festival, two weeks after Easter — the big parade runs right through here.
- Carnival, February — likewise.
- December — the Christmas lights, which on Madeira are in a category of their own, are switched on in early December. From then the camera is worth opening after dark.
- New Year’s Eve — you only catch part of the fireworks over the bay from here, but you do see exactly how full the city is.
When it’s best
In the evening, once the lights are on. In daylight it’s a street.
Watch it or go?
For the festivals: go, and go early. Turn up at the Flower Festival at ten and you’ll be in the third row. The camera exists to show you that in advance — it reliably tells you how deep the crowd already is.
