Guided mountain hikes on Madeira

Updated 17. August 2026

The routes that matter

Route Length from Character
PR1 Pico do Arieiro → Pico Ruivo 10 km €44 high mountain, stairs, tunnels, exposed
PR8 Ponta de São Lourenço 8 km €31 bare peninsula, wind, no shade
PR9 Caldeirão Verde 13 km €40 levada, tunnels, waterfall at the end
PR13 Vereda do Fanal 11 km €41 cloud forest, laurel trees, flat
Vereda do Larano 9 km €40 coastal path, cliff edge, spectacular
Vereda dos Balcões 1.5 km 20 minutes, anyone can do it

PR8 on Ponta de São Lourenço is the most accessible serious walk on the island: no tunnels, no head for heights required — but four hours without a square metre of shade. Take twice the water you think you need.

Fanal is less a hike than a place. Ancient til trees on a plateau that spends half the year in fog. In sunshine it is a meadow; in fog it is the picture people come for. Operators drive there deliberately when the weather is right.

What €18 buys and what €48 buys

The price gap is almost never about the route. It is about the format:

  • €18–33 — transfer. Minibus out, minibus back, you walk alone.
  • €36–48 — guided group. Guide, often 15–25 people, pickup included.
  • €50–70 — small group (max. 8). More flexibility on pace, more explanation.
  • €80–130 — private. Your route, your speed.

On full-day tours lunch is sometimes included and often not. That too explains two different prices for the same path.

What to watch for

  • A SIMplifica reservation is compulsory on many PR routes. Check whether the operator handles it.
  • Boots. Proper soles, not trainers. Levada paths are damp and the stone is slick.
  • The weather is not the same island-wide. A wet morning in Funchal says nothing about the north.
  • Heights: PR1 and Larano are exposed and unprotected in places. PR8 is wide, but it drops away steeply on both sides.
  • Starts are early — 7:00 to 8:00 am is normal, 4:30 am for sunrise tours.

Book it or walk it yourself?

With a hire car and a loop route: yourself. For point-to-point routes, in winter, or if you have no car: book — the supply of guided walks here is dense enough that you will almost always find a group size that suits you.
