Sunset tours on Madeira

Updated 17. August 2026

On the water

Catamaran below Cabo Girão, from about €35, three hours. The sun drops west behind the cliffs while the boat lies at anchor under 580 metres of rock. The classic version.

Premium catamaran, all inclusive, from about €72, 2.5 hours. Smaller group, drinks and snacks included.

Sailing trip, from about €55, three hours. Over 2,400 reviews at 4.8 — with wind, this is the nicest version.

Traditional wooden boat with drinks, from about €50, three hours. 4.9 stars across more than 900 reviews. Slow, unhurried, poncha on board.

New Year’s Eve, from about €150, 1.5 hours. Funchal’s fireworks from the water — the display is known as one of the world’s largest and the bay is the best auditorium. Sells out months ahead.

On the mountain

Pico do Arieiro in the evening, from about €35, 3–4 hours. The same road as at sunrise, minus the 4 am alarm. Over 1,200 reviews. If you will not get up early, this gets you nearly the same picture — with more people and warmer air.

Sunset PR1 transfer, from about €50, three hours. Including the first stretch of the trail.

When the sun sets

Roughly: around 21:00 in June, around 17:45 in December (Madeira keeps Western European Time, like Portugal and the UK). Pickup times shift across the year accordingly — check them when booking, it is the commonest mix-up.

What to watch for

  • At sea it turns cold abruptly once the sun is gone. Even in August.
  • On the mountain a jacket and hat are non-negotiable; it is often below 10 °C.
  • The drive back down from Arieiro in the dark, on hairpins, is the real reason to book a transfer here.
  • Cloud is not refundable — a sunset is sold as a time of day, not a photograph.

Book it or do it yourself?

Yourself on the mountain: drive up, look, come back in the dark. Book on the water — from land you see the sunset, but not the cliffs backlit, and that is the point.

Free alternatives from land: Ponta do Sol, Paúl do Mar, and Ponta do Pargo in the far west with its lighthouse, where the sun really does stand over the open Atlantic.
