The click sends data to Google, including your IP address.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><\/div>\n<h2>What you see<\/h2>\n<p>The harbour basin, the quay, fishing boats, and behind them the bare spine of the peninsula. Until 1981 this was Portugal&#8217;s last <strong>whaling station<\/strong>. Today it&#8217;s a container port and free-trade zone \u2014 and home to the whale museum, which tells its own history without softening it.<\/p>\n<h2>When it&#8217;s best<\/h2>\n<p>As a weather window for the <strong><a href=\"\/en\/madeira-osten\/\">Ponta de S\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o<\/a><\/strong>, which begins right next door. That walk is the only one on Madeira with no forest at all: eight kilometres over a bare headland, no shade, and the same sun that would be pleasant in the laurel forest is hard out there.<\/p>\n<p>If the camera shows wind in the boats, it&#8217;s blowing twice as hard on the peninsula \u2014 it lies fully exposed to the north-east trade.<\/p>\n<h2>Watch it or go?<\/h2>\n<p>The town itself: watching is enough. A working port isn&#8217;t a day out, and the whale museum rewards genuine interest only.<\/p>\n<p>The peninsula behind it: go, without question. It looks like a different country \u2014 red, ochre, bare \u2014 and it&#8217;s the most striking walk on the island.
