The click sends data to Google, including your IP address.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><\/div>\n<h2>What you see<\/h2>\n<p>A sheltered bay between two breakwaters, and between them pale sand that does not belong here: it was shipped in, and the breakwaters hold it. The result is the calmest place to swim on the west coast \u2014 no swell, no shingle, a shallow entry.<\/p>\n<p>Above it sits the <strong>Mudas<\/strong>, the contemporary art museum, a concrete building that ducks into the hillside.<\/p>\n<h2>When it&#8217;s best<\/h2>\n<p>Mornings, when you want to know how busy it will get. In July and August the beach is packed by afternoon; if you open the camera at ten and already see towels, go somewhere else.<\/p>\n<h2>Watch it or go?<\/h2>\n<p>Go if you have children with you. For families it&#8217;s the best swimming spot in the west, and the only one where nobody hobbles over pebbles. Without children the beach is interchangeable, and the <a href=\"\/en\/madeira-westen\/\">Mudas<\/a> is the better reason for the drive.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s about 45 minutes from Funchal on the expressway.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Madeira is a volcanic island and therefore has almost no sand.
