Most lessons happen here.

Machico (east), from about €70. Madeira’s one large yellow sand beach (imported), a sheltered bay, relaxed conditions.

São Vicente (north), from about €65, 1.5 hours. Short format, good as a test.

Funchal, from about €75, four hours. With pickup — the lesson still happens elsewhere, usually in the north. What you are paying for is largely the drive.

Jardim do Mar and Paul do Mar in the west are famous waves — and not beginner spots. Nobody teaches there; people watch.

When

Unlike almost everything else on this island, winter is the better season: the North Atlantic swells run October to March, and water around 19 °C is entirely fine in a wetsuit. Summer is often too flat — lessons get moved or cancelled.

What is included

Board, wetsuit, instructor, usually photos. Full-day formats often include a transfer from Funchal. You bring swimwear, a towel and plenty of sun cream.

What to watch for

You must swim confidently, beginner course or not.

North coast means driving: Funchal to Porto da Cruz is 45 minutes. Lessons with pickup save you the car.

Cancellations are normal and a good sign — no swell, no lesson.

Rock: Madeira’s beaches are mostly pebble and stone. Surf shoes are provided or recommended.

Groups are small (4–8), which is the decisive factor in a surf lesson.

Book it or do it yourself?

As a beginner: take the lesson. Renting a board without a briefing on a coast of rock and current is a poor idea. If you already surf, rent on the spot in Porto da Cruz or Jardim do Mar — that runs through the surf schools directly, not booking portals.

👉 See all surf lessons on GetYourGuide (Affiliate link)

Next: Snorkelling and kayaking · Diving · North Madeira

Nine courses from around €65, mostly two to four hours.
