Take twice the water you think you need.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fanal<\/strong> is less a hike than a place. Ancient til trees on a plateau that spends half the year in fog. In sunshine it is a meadow; in fog it is the picture people come for. Operators drive there deliberately when the weather is right.<\/p>\n<h2>What \u20ac18 buys and what \u20ac48 buys<\/h2>\n<p>The price gap is almost never about the route. It is about the format:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u20ac18\u201333 \u2014 transfer.<\/strong> Minibus out, minibus back, you walk alone.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u20ac36\u201348 \u2014 guided group.<\/strong> Guide, often 15\u201325 people, pickup included.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u20ac50\u201370 \u2014 small group (max. 8).<\/strong> More flexibility on pace, more explanation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u20ac80\u2013130 \u2014 private.<\/strong> Your route, your speed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On full-day tours <strong>lunch<\/strong> is sometimes included and often not. That too explains two different prices for the same path.<\/p>\n<h2>What to watch for<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong><a href=\"\/en\/booking-trails-simplifica\/\">SIMplifica reservation<\/a><\/strong> is compulsory on many PR routes. Check whether the operator handles it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Boots.<\/strong> Proper soles, not trainers. Levada paths are damp and the stone is slick.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The weather <a href=\"\/en\/weather-north-south-madeira\/\">is not the same island-wide<\/a>.<\/strong> A wet morning in Funchal says nothing about the north.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Heights:<\/strong> PR1 and Larano are exposed and unprotected in places. PR8 is wide, but it drops away steeply on both sides.<\/li>\n<li>Starts are early \u2014 7:00 to 8:00 am is normal, 4:30 am for sunrise tours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Book it or walk it yourself?<\/h2>\n<p>With a hire car and a loop route: yourself.
