The route crosses open Atlantic; in wind the crossing is noticeable. If you are prone to seasickness, plan for it \u2014 the return leg on the same day is rarely better.<\/p>\n<p>A car is not needed. Porto Santo is eleven kilometres long, and the beach lies along one stretch of it.<\/p>\n<h2>Day trip or overnight<\/h2>\n<p>As a day trip, the outward and return crossings leave about five to six hours on the island. That covers the beach and Vila Baleira, and not much more. To see the island itself \u2014 the viewpoint hills in the north, the Ilh\u00e9u offshore \u2014 stay overnight.<\/p>\n<h2>Why it looks different<\/h2>\n<p>Porto Santo is geologically older and far flatter than Madeira. There is no laurel forest, little water and no levadas.
